AFC Super Bowl Representatives… Is there a trend?

Posted on January 5, 2012

Since 2003 the New England Patriots have been to three Super Bowls – but who has represented the AFC in the Super Bowl in the seasons the Patriots have fallen short? Here’s a quick look:

2003: New England Patriots (14-2)

2004: New England Patriots (14-2)

2005: Pittsburgh Steelers (11-5)

2006: Indianapolis Colts (12-4)

2007: New England Patriots (16-0)

The Patriots last Super Bowl appearance came in the 2007 season, where they fell just short of a perfect season in Super Bowl XLII.

2008: Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4)

2009: Indianapolis Colts (14-2)

2010: Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4)

2011: ????????????????????

You would have to go back all the way to the 2002 NFL season to find a team other than the Patriots, Steelers or Colts that qualified for the Super Bowl – the Oakland Raiders, who lost to the Tampa Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII. Will the trend continue this year? For Patriots’ fans, the hope would be yes as it certainly looks like New England’s turn to play in Super Sunday.
